The Teams issue

We've all weathered the turbulent economy in 2009 and the effort involved has taught us a lot. Those of you in leadership positions will have been reminded, just as I have, how especially invaluable our colleagues and teams are at times like this. Without the positive energy, the diverse talent and perseverance of our teams, our organisations would most likely be struggling as we step into 2010.

I have to say I have learnt from my many years of both working as a coach to leaders and running my own business that it is critical for leaders to surround themselves with talent. Leaders who act alone are by definition not leaders. Those who believe they know best or strive for the admiration of others by taking on too much and seeking to make all the major decisions rarely leave a sustainable legacy. If we appreciate, promote and encourage the talent in our teams, the whole organisation is much more likely to be more successful and for longer. So, as you firm up your plans for 2010, keep this in mind, your teams are you and you are your teams. Invest in your teams in the same way that you invest in yourself and the results could be exponential - and you could see your organisation's overall morale rise at the same time.

This issue of OPPinions includes lots of ideas on teams and development to help you, your teams and your organisation succeed. Make sure to look at the recent developments in
FIRO-B
and get a glimpse of all our products in the new 2010 OPP Catalogue.

Is FIRO-B right for your team's advanced development?

Have you been looking for something new to add to your team development programme? Something to help members of your teams better understand what drives their behaviours and what causes them to get mixed messages from their teammates? FIRO-B is an excellent interpersonal tool for teams to illustrate their individual wants compared to their personal needs, helping individuals within a team improve their communication with one another. Seem interesting? Have a read through the quotes below from team leaders who have chosen FIRO-B for their team development.

“I have a team that have been working together for some time and are now going through a transition. I want us be aware of any potential sources of tension and to understand if and why we might be giving each other mixed messages”

“I'm leading a team where we'd like to manage our conflict more effectively”

“I manage a team of good performers but they just don't seem to glue as a team, there is a lot of internal competition and point scoring. I would like to be able to take them from a good team to a great team by helping them to work better together!”
