The "what were they thinking" issue

What is 'good judgement'? From politics to commerce, sport to entertainment, we've watched events unfold and have had cause to wonder: 'What ever were they thinking?'

So why is it so hard sometimes for otherwise apparently sensible people to see distortions and excesses that are as plain as day to the rest of us? Have they lost their sense of perspective? Have they become so accustomed to operating at high intensity in a small, heterogeneous world, and so adept at pragmatism as a means of moving things forward in the face of obstacles, that they lose sight of the normal parameters of decision-making and sound judgement?

Run-of-the-mill organisations can unfortunately face the same challenges, on a smaller scale. Managers can easily lose their sense of perspective as they compete for resources, work longer hours, are tasked with delivering more with less while facing the kind of people decisions that stay with them long after they have left the office. The world that they occupy is so immediate and relentless that it can be difficult for them to maintain the broader view.

There's never been a better time for HR and L&D professionals to be skilled coaching practitioners. If a coach can keep managers communicating and connected, they are oiling the wheels of productivity and engagement for the whole organisation.

OPP's instruments provide great platforms for coaching and targeted development support. If you've been thinking of qualifying in 16PF®, FIRO-B® or MBTI® Step II – look out for our upcoming summer sale. Don't miss out on these great discounted rates!

Case study: "Yeah but no but yeah but no but" - improving communication with MBTI® applications

MBTI logo

With an expansive portfolio including the likes of Little Britain, Wallace & Gromit, Fawlty Towers, and many David Attenborough classics, 2 entertain is a leading UK independent multimedia company specialising in the publishing and distribution of music and video.

For the last two years, 2 entertain has commissioned an annual staff survey called ‘2 engage'. With a 65% participation level, the survey is considered to be an excellent indicator of trends within the company. The 2008 survey identified communication and cross-departmental working as important areas for improvement. Given that 2 entertain's success during a period of rapid expansion had been built on flexibility, efficient communication and passion for new products and innovations, this feedback was taken very seriously.

Ward Atkinson, Learning and Development Manager at 2 entertain, creatively incorporated MBTI and FIRO-B into a development programme to help his colleagues improve communication and become more aware of their influence on others.

Featured report: TKI Profile and Interpretive Report

TKI logo

Line managers, are you struggling to find innovative, cost-effective methods to manage disagreements within your teams? Consider TKI, an easy-to-use instrument that helps people identify their preferred approach to conflict.

Start using the TKI today – no qualifications required!!!

…in the aftermath of redundancies, salary reductions and unexpected departures, restructured teams can find themselves under increasing pressure to deliver, making communication with colleagues even more strained than it has been in the recent past. Managers are finding it more difficult to resolve underlying tension bubbling up within teams.

The TKI Profile and Interpretive Report is designed to help individuals understand their particular approach to conflict, with suggestions for alternative methods to address tension in the workplace. The report includes a detailed interpretation of the respondent's approach to conflict, as well as explanations of five easy-to-understand modes of conflict behaviours.

Line managers find the TKI to be a non-threatening tool that easily creates the foundation for conversations with direct reports. With appealing graphics and tables to map out the five conflict modes, the TKI report is written in everyday language making it a popular choice to manage workplace tension on an individual basis. And, as we said, the best part about it is that the TKI requires no additional qualifications – so line managers, you can start using it today!
